Islington Gazette Schools’ Cup is shared after drawn final at West Ham’s old ground

Holloway and Haverstock schools will share the Islington Gazette Schools’ Cup after contesting a 1-1 draw in one of the last games to be played at Upton Park.
The Year 10 final, which was held over from last season because the teams were unable to play at Emirates Stadium, finally took place on Saturday at West Ham’s former home.
But there was no outright winner of the cup, with Haverstock’s Charlie Clarke scoring in the second half to cancel out Yasen Mulumba’s opener for Holloway and ensure that neither team went home empty-handed.
By tradition, the cup is shared if neither team wins the final, without resorting to a penalty shoot-out, and it was duly presented to team captains Samuel Kisingu (Holloway) and Frankie McCarthy (Haverstock).
Holloway coach Joe Fox said: “It was good to be involved in what was more or less the last game at Upton Park – even if it was a bit bizarre to play in front of a stand that had been half blown up because they’d had filming going on!
“The pitch was nice, although obviously bigger than what the boys were used to. We probably should have put it out of sight in the first half, but it was a good game of football, played in the right kind of spirit.”
Mulumba was unlucky with a shot that grazed the outside of the post, but he then opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time, firing home from close range.
However, Haverstock clinched a share of the spoils when a corner was half-cleared to the edge of the box and Clarke’s left-foot chip sailed over everyone into the net.
Haverstock coach Jamie Histed said: “Charlie’s a year younger than most of the team and it was good to see him score. We had loads of supporters to cheer us on and I think the draw was a fair result in the end.
“The boys played their socks off, they gave it everything. Holloway had the trophy in their bag before we could say anything but I told Joe not to worry, we’ve got other cups at Haverstock anyway!”
