Myddleton Arms manager Dave Weemes says his side are content to start Thursday’s Islington Gazette Cup final as underdogs against Regent’s FC.

Regent’s go into the Market Road clash (kick-off 8pm) as favourites for the trophy, having gone unbeaten all season and wrapped up the Islington Midweek League Premier Division championship in March.

They have also won all three of their previous meetings this season with Myddleton, who lifted the trophy two years ago in their previous guise as Islington Boxing Club.

Weemes said: “Regent’s are a good side and, having won the league, they’ll be favourites but we’re quite happy with that. The boys have been here before and they know what’s required.

“They’re a bit disappointed with finishing fourth in the league and this is a good opportunity to put a trophy on the table.

“I’d like to thank the pub – everyone there’s been really supportive since they got involved with us and hopefully now we can give them something to enjoy.”

Regent’s, who are aiming to add further silverware to their league crown, also face Cricklewood Wanderers in the Ken Doherty Memorial Trophy final a week on Monday.

Manager Des Casey said: “Winning the league’s a good springboard for us and it’s made us want more success – the desire is certainly there and we’re looking forward to the final.

“Every time we’ve met Myddleton this season it’s been a hard-fought contest and I’m sure it’ll be the same again.”
