Newly-formed Highbury Wolves are hungry for success after emerging from the pack to gain a place in next season’s Camden & Islington Youth League.

The Wolves will field two under-eight sides in the Market Road league, as well as under-10 and under-12 teams, after their application was one of just four from around 100 to be accepted.

The club represents Highbury Football School, which was set up only two months ago by brothers Luciano and Giuseppe Zeraschi, and has already attracted almost 50 youngsters.

They held a successful half-term camp at Highbury Fields at the end of May and are following it up with the first in a series of summer camps, starting on Monday at the same venue.

“We’ve lived in Islington all our lives and part of the reason for the name of the team is that I played for a side called Highbury Wolves years ago as a kid,” explained Luciano.

“The other reason is that I recently adopted a Siberian husky dog called Maya who looks a bit like a wolf! She’s going to be our mascot when the season starts.

“It’s been going really well since we started off in May. We’ve got some good players, kids from all kinds of social backgrounds and there’s a real sense of belonging.

“There are other teams who have been playing together for years now, so the first aim is to play together as much as we can. We’re not expecting to win the league but that’s what we’ve got to aim for.”

The club’s summer camp, which runs from Monday until Friday August 2 (9.30am to 3.30pm each day) is open to boys and girls aged between four and 12.

They also hold regular training sessions from 10am to midday on both Saturdays and Sundays at Highbury Fields, and currently recruiting new players.
