Islington BC’s Valerian Spicer beat the same opponent twice in two days to continue her good form in the run-up to next month’s Commonwealth Games.

Spicer took a unanimous decision against Carrie Coejtei (Felbridge BC), a former European silver medallist, on Islington’s dinner show at The Royal National Hotel, Russell Square.

And the Islington fighter, who will represent Dominica at Glasgow 2014, then repeated the result when she faced Coejtei again the following night at the Felbridge show in East Grinstead.

Spicer’s success was one of five for home boxers on the Islington show, which drew a 350-plus crowd, and was sponsored by Geo F Trumper (Gentlemen’s Grooming).

Gerard McDonagh (Islington) recovered from a slow first round to remain undefeated with a unanimous points win over Jason Davis (Windrush Valley BC).

Next up for Islington was Kian-Shay Chettry, who recorded his first win by stopping James Connor (Swale Gloves) in the final round.

Chettry pressured his opponent with a series of two-handed attacks from the first bell and forced a standing eight count in the second round before the referee halted the contest midway through the third.

Islington’s Safi Abdullah made a bright start in his bout against GB squad member Jack Hillier (Southampton), boxing at long range to win the first round.

But he visibly tired as the contest progressed and, with Hillier beginning to get on top, the referee ended proceedings in the third round.

Paddy McCarthy’s clash with Ossie Peroshi (Walcott BC) proved to be the bout of the night as the pair went toe to toe, with the Islington boxer ending each round strongly.

A string of good body shots and left hooks to the head led to a standing eight count for Peroshi in the third round and McCarthy secured both a unanimous decision and the best home boxer of the night award.

Tyrone Negasi continued his fine season with a unanimous victory over another GB squad member, Harry Limburn (Southampton).

Negasi boxed well behind his jab and his movement enabled him to get in close, throwing intelligent combinations to head and body.

Islington’s Amy Pu worked hard against the more experienced Ellie Barker (Fitzroy Lodge), throwing straight punches, but took a standing eight count in the first round and the unanimous decision went in favour of her opponent.

Spicer was next into the ring and continually caught Coejtei with quick combinations, dominating throughout the four-round contest.

The show was rounded off by Islington’s Jeff Ofori, who was edged out on a tight split decision against Louis Greene (Strood BC).

Green landed some punishing hooks in the first two rounds and, although the Islington man changed his tactics and responded with some dangerous combinations, it was not enough to swing the verdict in his favour.

Islington’s Kenyon Reid was unlucky to lose a split decision after he appeared to be well ahead against the home club’s Gary Howes on the Felbridge show.
