Islington BC newcomer Valerian Spicer produced an almost punch-perfect debut display as she overcame former European bronze medallist Carly Weallans at The Troxy, east London.

Spicer, a former ABA champion who has joined Islington from Chadwell ABC, was representing London in their prestigious match against the Army and helped to secure a 3-2 victory.

Both boxers treated each other with respect in a cagey start to the contest (four rounds of two minutes each), but a sharp right hand from Spicer gave the ex-England international cause for concern.

As her opponent grew in confidence, Weallans walked onto several hard counter-right punches and needed all her experience to avoid a standing count in the third round.

Spicer continued to force the pace in the final round, but the Islington boxer’s victory was already assured, with all five judges voting in her favour.

Two other Islington fighters represented the London team, with Enrico Mullings dropping a unanimous decision to the Army’s Callum Larson in what was voted the best bout of the evening.

The tall, rangy Larson used his jab to edge ahead in the first round of the under-72kg contest, but Mullings fought back as he repeatedly knocked back his opponent’s head with stiff double jabs.

A big right from Mullings wobbled his opponent – only for the Army boxer to respond with two telling blows of his own before unloading a four-punch combination in the third round.

Mullings roared back again with a heavy left hook, but he was unable to follow that up and Larson re-established control in the final round to take the decision from all five judges.

The third Islington boxer in action was Troy Smart, who warmed up for the senior ABA novice championships with an impressive unanimous points success against the Army’s Nico Chambers.

Southpaw Chambers – who looked suspiciously heavier than the under-55kg specification – was unable to cope with the speed and movement shown by his opponent.

Smart boxed with discipline, waiting for his chance, and he knocked the Army boxer halfway across the ring with an explosive right hand in the third round.

He followed that up with a one-two combination and Chambers, who was warned several times for holding, somehow managed to see the contest through as Smart took a 5-0 decision.
