Islington BC’s Tyrone Negasi was edged out in his bid for glory at the England Youth Championships after losing Friday’s London final.

Negasi ended up on the wrong end of a very close unanimous decision against Elliott Whale (Nemesis BC) in the Class A Under-52kg final at Elephant & Castle.

In a cagey opening round, neither boxer landed any telling punches as Whale did his best to keep the Islington man at bay and caught him with the odd jab.

However, Negasi seized the initiative in the second, catching his opponent with a series of hard left hooks to head and body and forcing him back behind his jab for most of the round.

The final round developed into a toe-to-toe affair in the centre of the ring, with both boxers landing some heavy blows – but it was Whale who did enough to catch the eye of the judges and take the verdict.
