Islington BC’s Georgiou Andreou shook off a bout of food poisoning to claim an impressive victory on the North West London Novice show at Hayes.

Andreou, who recently represented London, took the Class B under-67kg fight against V Nedelcu (Stonebridge) at short notice despite his illness – and dug deep to secure a unanimous decision.

Good footwork from the Islington fighter enabled him to take the first round and, although Nedelcu fought back in the second, Andreou underlined his potential with a strong finish.

Another Islington senior was also victorious on the night – Aaron Nicely, who has continued to perform well since his move from Coventry and overcame O Bentham (Times ABC) on a unanimous decision.

Nicely started the Class A Under-81kg contest with an educated jab, using single and doubles to keep his opponent at bay and then produced better combinations in the second and third rounds to clinch victory.

The Hazellville Road club had three other boxers in action, with Ramel Smith never really finding his rhythm as he lost a unanimous decision to J Pedro (Northolt) in their Class A Under-71kg clash.

Islington’s Dwayne Taylor began well in his Class A Under-81kg contest against debutant L Trevena (Finchley ABC), but was forced onto the back foot and seemed to lose confidence as he dropped a unanimous decision.

Kenyon Reid’s Class B Under-71kg fight against the taller A Ananivc (Neasden ABC) followed the reverse pattern as he stood off too much in the first two rounds and, despite improving towards the end, it was not enough to prevent a unanimous verdict for his opponent.

Islington’s Mateusz Szczepkowski chalked up his fourth successive victory as he took a split decision against home boxer John Cawley at the MK Victors ABC show in Milton Keynes on Friday.

Although Szczepkowski held a 4kg weight advantage, the more experienced Cawley started well and the Islington man had to rely on the basics as he gradually took control and secured the win.

Lamin Conteh boxed on the same show and produced a confident display, getting stronger as the 72kg fight went on to clinch a unanimous decision against Oleg Jabolonins (Berinsfield ABC).

A third Islington fighter, 13-year-old Joshua Strong performed well in his first skills contest at Milton Keynes, where he faced Ob Oko (Far Cotton).

Islington are holding their first dinner show of the season on Friday night at the Royal National Hotel, Russell Square.

Doors open at 6pm, with dinner at 7.30pm and boxing due to get under way at 9pm (finishing at around 1am).
