Islington Boxing Club had plenty to cheer at their ‘Hire A Hero’ charity dinner show at Wellington Barracks last Friday.
The event featured 11 bouts, with nine boxers from the local club, and Judah Meade (58kg) won a unanimous decision against Tireak Nawezi (Hornets) in an entertaining first bout.
Eli Musah (80kg) was out to make amends after a debut loss as he faced Tony Williams (AARC Support Battalion) in his first senior outing and landed clean jabs in the first round.
Williams rallied to take the second, but Musah dug deep to earn a split decision.
Islam Llabjani (70kg) was also making his senior debut against Dylan Oke (Fight for Peace) in his first fight for three years and had some success, despite losing a majority verdict.
Former GB and England boxer Nina Hughes defended her England Boxing title at 57kg against Natalia Rok (Evolve BA) on a split decision, before Jason Mallia (70kg) made his Islington debut against Joel Brown (Dagenham).
And Mallia was made to work hard for a split decision, as southpaw Brown boxed well around the ring.
Islington’s Shaun Thomas (60kg) beat Fairbairn’s Fatjon Gola on a unanimous decision after a superb display.
Thomas dropped Gola in the second round and also forced him to take a standing eight count in a dominant display ahead of his return to Elite ABA action this weekend.
London Intermediate champion Ewan Jenkins (63kg) kept his winning run going with a split decision against Shamari McKay, showing slick boxing skills against an aggressive rival, and Ion Olaru (76kg) also celebrated a win ahead of the forthcoming elite championships.
Olaru beat Milambo Makani (Fight for Peace) with good movement and jabs earning a unanimous verdict.
Hamza Zanna (All Stars) beat Shaun Badcott (AARC) on a unanimous decision, before Islington’s Ahmed Rabnawaz (67kg) beat Jordan Hutchinson (AARC) in a superb debut.
Kevin Agbodzah (69kg) made it two wins in two as he edged out Max Triple (AARC) on a split decision and Reggie Hagland said: “It was a pleasure to provide the boxing for Hire a Hero for the second year in a row. We’re always keen on helping when called upon.”
