Islington BC’s Lamin Conteh marked his debut for the London ABA team with his first stoppage victory in their annual match against 1860 Munich ABC.

The Islington light-middleweight prospect, with 13 bouts to his name, was up against a far more experienced opponent in home boxer Oliver Schöfer, competing for the 59th time.

But Conteh – one of four Islington boxers in the nine-strong London party – dominated the 70kg contest and clinched the win after Schöfer took two standing eight counts in the second round.

Strong scoring shots to both head and body put Conteh ahead at the end of the first round and the German southpaw took his first count early in the second.

Another flurry of shots from Conteh soon afterwards resulted in a second count – but Schöfer immediately began to remove his gloves and threw out his gum shield in frustration, prompting the referee to end the contest.

That was the Islington quartet’s sole success – although two claimed draws that helped to ensure the match finished with honours even at 4-4.

However, Aaron Nicely suffered his first defeat since joining the Hazellville Road club from Coventry Boys ABC last year, going down to Emil Breuer of Munich.

The 18-year-old light-heavyweight, who was also making his London debut, had bright spells but lost the first two rounds and, although some crisp blows put him on top in the third, it was not enough.

Islington’s Amy Andrew, who recently switched from white collar boxing, made a belated competitive debut as she took on Alexandra Hubrig (1860 Munich) at 64kg.

Andrew landed her jabs effectively and used good head movement to avoid her opponent’s punches but, despite being in control of the fight throughout, the judges scored it as a draw.

Islington heavyweight Sherif ‘The Sandman’ Musah took part in the match decider against home boxer Raschad Kyekyassi, boxing on the front foot and successfully landing head and body shots.

However, Musah gradually began to tire and his opponent hit back with a spell of strong combination punches, resulting in a standing eight count – but the Islington man survived and the contest was declared a draw.

Meanwhile, Musah booked his place in the North West London 91kg final at the England Elite Championships after a scrappy encounter with C Cheal (Dale Youth ABC).

Musah made a slow start to his campaign at Hayes Working Men’s Club on Sunday, losing the opening round, but he stepped up the pace and Cheal was retired by his corner just before the third round.

The Islington man faces M Olobridge (Stonebridge ABC) at the same venue on Thursday, while team-mate Troy Smart is out for revenge in the 56kg final against Dale Youth’s Joey Teale, who beat him twice on split decisions last year.
