Various talented teenagers secure triumphs at number of local events

It proved to be a busy, but successful weekend for some of Islington Boxing Club’s brightest young hopes with four shows in just two days.

On Friday night, there was double success for Martin Camera and Azeem Bakare, who made the short trip to Chigwell and the Prince Regent Hotel to take part in bouts on the Fairbairn ABC dinner show.

Camera was making his amateur boxing debut on the night and came up against home talent Deva Lara in a 62kg contest.

The Islington boxer dominated the contest from the off, however, and gave Lara a standing eight count in the opening round.

As the encounter went on, the 14-year-old Camara only got stronger and stronger and it was no surprise when he was awarded a unanimous decision win at the end of the contest.

Camara’s club-mate Bakare also made his amateur boxing debut in a 72kg contest on the night and came up against another Fairbairn youngster in the shape of Abubakar Akbari.

Much like his fellow Islington boxer, Bakare out boxed his opponent throughout the contest and the youngster produced a very skilful display to take a unanimous decision win, all the more enjoyable for Bakare having taking the bout at less than 24 hours notice.

Other Islington BC hopes were also in action on Friday night where Jerome Campbell represented a London Boxing select team against Myles Casey of the Limerick Boxing team at the Sheraton Hotel, Park Lane.

Both boxers were feeling each other in the opening round with the Irish hope Casey opting for double jabs, which were outscoring Campbell’s single shots early on.

The second round again began very evenly between the lightweight pair, before Campbell started to take the centre of the ring much more and he began to land the cleaner shots made by the pair and that set up an interesting third and final round.

Either boxer could have won, but unfortunately for Campbell, the Irish hope upped his work rate in the final round and won on a unanimous verdict.
