Islington BC’s Tommy ‘The Tank’ Kerrigan put his disappointment from the national schools finals behind him with an impressive win in St Albans on Saturday.

The 14-year-old was denied the opportunity of an Under-72kg title at the England Boxing Schools Championships a week earlier when opponent George Cubbin withdrew due to illness.

However, Kerrigan responded with a hard-fought victory against home boxer Liam Murphy on the St Albans ABC dinner show at Oaklands College – one of three successes on the night for Islington.

Facing an opponent who was almost a year his senior, Kerrigan held his own as the pair exchanged strong blows to both head and body and dug deep to secure a unanimous decision.

Prince Dubois, 10, was the first Islington boxer into the ring for his fourth skills contest, against Tommy Brinkley (St Albans) – and probably his last as he is expected to move up to competitive boxing before the end of the season.

Team-mate Carlos Bain, meanwhile, did take part in his first competitive bout, putting John Stanley (St Albans) on the back foot and landing a number of eye-catching punches to win by unanimous decision.

Callum Angel-Taylor was the third Islington boxer to emerge victorious, returning to winning ways as he defeated Luke Keating (Welwyn Garden City) on a unanimous decision.

The 14-year-old threw and landed the heavier punches and displayed good head movement to avoid Keating’s shots in a close contest.

Senior boxer Ramel Smith was also in action on the show, but he lost out by unanimous decision in his 70kg clash with St Albans debutant Moses Mabote.

Times ABC youngster Freddie Kinsella produced a dominant display to overcome F Murphy (St Albans) on a split decision at the same show.

In only his second bout, the 13-year-old took control from the start and almost stopped Murphy in the opening round, but eventually settled for the victory on points.

Times coach Dave Ryan said: “Freddie showed real maturity and gave a fantastic display of boxing – he used his movement well and his jab was excellent.”

Also victorious was Times’ Yuli Jashara, who returned to the ring following a three-year break and took a unanimous decision against the taller, heavier C Collins (St Albans).
