Islington Boxing Club have been recognised for their work at a nearby girls’ school after winning a prestigious award from Sport England.

The club have been running weekly boxing sessions, led by recreational coach Anthony Wright, for students aged 14 and above at Mount Carmel Technology College over the past year.

Representatives of Sport England – who are funding the programme – visited Islington BC’s Hazellville Road base on Tuesday to present them with the Regional Satellite Club of the Year award.

Islington BC chairman Lenny Hagland said: “The girls at Mount Carmel have really taken to it and we’ll probably be looking to do this in one or two other schools as well.

“The satellite club is open to all within the local community, not just the school, and it can give young people the pathway to compete in boxing.”
