Karl Latham gave Islington Police Warthogs belated cause for celebration by becoming their only try-scorer at the Commissioner’s Cup Sevens tournament on Sunday.
The Warthogs found it tough going at the five-team charity tournament, which was held in aid of the Born Too Soon campaign for Kingston Hospital’s neonatal unit.
Hosts Metropolitan Police proved too strong for the Islington side – and, despite valiant runs from both Sam and Phil Perren, they were unable to cross the whitewash.
It was a similar story in the Warthogs’ next two matches as they lost out to Territorial Support Group 1 and then Met Barbarians, again without managing to score a try.
Although they were beaten again in their final game, against tournament winners Surrey Police, the Warthogs – who are sponsored by The Old Red Lion pub, St John Street – finally broke their duck.
A held-up tackle by captain Dan Quinn allowed Sid Nelson to rip the ball from the grasp of a Surrey player and set up a sequence of passes that enabled Latham to steam down the line for a try.
“Although we didn’t win any of our games, we had a great day and went home with a smile – along with the wooden spoon,” said Quinn.
