Islington BC completed a clean sweep of the senior ABA novice north-west London finals as all five of their fighters triumphed at Hayes Working Men’s Club.

The successful quintet follow Scott Smart (Class A Under-51kg), Dujon Semper-Hughes (Class B Under-60kg) and team captain Jermaine Kelly (Class B Under-86kg), who had already progressed via walkovers.

That gives Islington a full complement of eight representatives in the London finals, which take place this weekend at the TA Centre, Grove Park.

Troy Smart was the first Islington boxer to confirm his progression with a victory over Mohammed Ahad (All Stars ABC) in the Class A Under-54kg final.

Having started slowly, Smart found his rhythm in the second round with a volley of punches and, although Ahad responded with a flurry of his own, the Islington man replied to ensure a narrow majority verdict.

In the Class A Under-63.5kg category, Islington’s Jeff Ofori continued his impressive run of form, as he comfortably swept past Dennis Wahome (Stonebridge ABC).

Ofori twice forced the referee to issue Wahome with a count, as the Stonebridge boxer struggled to cope with his big-hitting opponent.

And Jordan Joseph took his first amateur title in the Class A Under-81kg category, with a classy performance against Dale Youth’s Kevin Oboh.

Joseph skilfully evaded Oboh’s opening punches, before a hard counter-hook forced a wobble from his opponent and gave the Islington boxer a unanimous victory.

Sherif ‘The Sandman’ Musah made it three wins in consecutive bouts against Hayes ABC rivals, following victory over Abbas Alahmad in the Class A Under-86kg category.

However, Alahmad refused to give Musah an easy ride and it took until the third round for the contest to be settled, with the referee stopping the fight when the Islington fighter dropped his opponent to take the win.

In the Under-71kg Class B final, Enrico Mullings found strong resistance from Times ABC’s Geoff Kiernan in the opening rounds, before finally easing aside his man in the final session.

Kiernan found Mullings’ range early on, but a series of left hooks gave the Islington boxer a unanimous points victory.

n Islington’s Ben Turner joined Tyrone Negasi in the last eight of the NABC Championships after victory over Dale Youth’s Jack Newham in the London finals.

Negasi received a bye to the last eight, but Turner had to navigate a tricky encounter in the Under-63kg category to book his place in the quarter-finals in Bognor Regis on November 9.

Turner struggled in the opening round, but found his rhythm in the second and by the third he had forced Newham into a standing eight count after a flurry of punches to ensure a majority decision.

However, Islington’s Safi Abdullah struggled to match his team-mate’s achievement, as he was beaten by the more experienced Frankie Barrett (Hooks) who took a close majority verdict in the Under-52kg class.
