Islington welterweight Jordan Grannum is confident of fighting for a world title one day as he prepares to launch his professional career.

The 22-year-old, who won successive national amateur championships with Islington BC, joins the paid ranks on Friday evening at the Camden Centre, King’s Cross.

Grannum will face journeyman Dan Carr over four rounds as part of a show which also features another ex-Islington star – unbeaten light-middleweight Aarron Morgan.

Sean Murphy, the former British and Commonwealth featherweight champion who trained Grannum at Finchley ABC, will be in his corner along with another welterweight from Islington, Darren Dyer.

“I couldn’t have anyone better in my corner,” said Grannum. “I want to go as far as I can and, with the team I’ve got behind me, I think I can be challenging for world titles in four or five years.

“I like a scrap, but I’m trying to develop into a boxer-puncher. I’ve got a good jab – that’s the most important punch – but I think I’ve got the shots to take me all the way to the top.”

Grannum, who was on Arsenal’s books as a youngster – and remains a passionate Gunners fan – initially took up boxing just before his 16th birthday when a friend invited him to go to the gym.

He ended up joining Islington BC and won all of his 26 bouts in the colours of the Hazellville Road club, including back-to-back national senior novices titles in 2011 and 2012.

Grannum, who finished with an amateur record of 28 wins from 31 contests, also picked up a gold medal at the Haringey Box Cup before moving on to Finchley.

The bill, which is headed by Darryll Williams’ clash with Richard Horton for the vacant Southern Area super-middleweight title and is co-promoted by Warrior Promotions and Mickey Helliet, will be screened on London Live.

Morgan, meanwhile, will be aiming for his ninth straight professional win when he faces Hungarian southpaw Istvan Kiss over six rounds.
