Ruhel Miah and Ewan Jenkins both came out on top in their categories and move on to the national quarter-finals with Sian Judd and Amy Broadhurst, who received byes.

Islington weighed in seven boxers at West Ham on Thursday, with five going on to box at the weekend.

Miah was up first in the Class C, under-56kg group and earned a first-round stoppage in his first outing since March.

Fairbairn’s Maaz Mohamed was forced on to the ropes with clean, strong punches and received two standing eight counts before the referee waved off the contest.

That put Miah up against former national junior champion Aaron Lawrence, also of Fairbairn, in the final and the Islington boxer controlled proceedings throughout.

Landing solid blows on his more experienced rival, he forced Lawrence to take a standing eight count late in the first round, and the referee decided the Fairbairn fighter could not continue.

Jenkins made his Islington debut in the Class C, under-64kg group and won a split decision against Repton’s Kane Wilson-Stroud.

The 18-year-old student, who recently joined from his home city of Bristol, then beat Danny Davis (Danson ABC) on another split decision, after taking the first round with long overhand rights and working harder in the final round.

Jiyan Oguz won his Class D, under-60kg semi-final against Repton’s Alireza Ghadiri, who was disqualified, but then lost to West Ham’s Jahid Munim on a unanimous decision.

Oguz struggled to get close to his taller opponent, as Munim used a southpaw stance to his advantage, and was warned twice in the second round for low use of head. And despite managing to find greater success in the final round, it was too late for Oguz to avoid defeat.

Dillon McDonagh lost to Repton’s Bobby Frankham in the Class B, under-56kg semi-final, as his corner threw in the towel late on, while Connor Daly lost a close Class C, under-49kg contest to Repton’s Amo Singh.

Daly won the opening round, but Singh took a 3-2 split decision.
