A round-up of how Islington BC fighters fared at the Bristol Box Cup earlier in June
Lewis Whelan-Barone and William Nantu both struck gold for Islington BC at the Bristol Box Cup earlier in the month.
Whelan-Barone and Nantu were among six club members to travel to the West Country for the competition.
A recent finalist in the National Schools Competition, Whelan-Barone came up against Michael Parr of Kirby in his final at under-50kg.
Whelan-Barone looked in the mood to get the job done quickly and after landing plenty of blows on Parr, the Kirby man was withdrawn by his corner in the second round.
“Lewis is another boxer who only joined the club earlier this year and we’re hoping he can go one step further in his last year in the Schools Championship next year as he has been runner up in the tournament two years on the spin,” said club spokesperson Reggie Hagland.
Nantu, meanwhile, took on Torrington Police rival Ned Pettifer in his final at U48kg.
The Islington hope produced his best display in club colours to date, beating Pettifer to claim the gold medal.
Twin brothers Kyron and Caiden Hughes both returned from the competition with silver medals.
Kyron, another recent National Schools finalist, took on Thomas Smith of Jennings BA in a final at U48kg, but was beaten despite by unanimous decision.
Caiden, meanwhile, stuck to his plan throughout in his final at U50kg against Freddie Pullen from Repton, but was also beaten by unanimous decision.
“The twins have both had a great first season at the club since joining from their former club,” added Hagland.
“There is more to come from these two fantastic young men who are good club boys and their dad Nyron is also a fantastic asset to our junior competitive squad as part of our dedicated and hardworking coaches.”
Maximillian Glennister was beaten by unanimous decision when taking on Lewis Smith of Jennings BA in his U32kg final.
George Bartlett defeated U48kg rival John Penford of Devonport in his semi-final, before losing to Chepstow’s Richard Gilheney.
