Jermaine Kelly will be aiming to do the double and add to his Under-86kg title triumph at last year’s ABA Senior Novice Championships on Thursday night, as part of Islington Boxing Club’s eight-man team.

The Class A boxer will first have to navigate the north-west London regional round at Hayes, before potentially competing in the London stage and then moving on to the national finals in December.

Scott Smart will also be relishing the opportunity to compete in the Under-51kg, but for different reasons after being beaten in the national finals last year.

The Class A boxer progressed after winning the London Novice title, as did Enrico Mullings in the Under-71kg category, and he will be competing again this year.

Jordan Joseph (Under-81kg) and Dujon Semper-Hughes (Under-60kg) will be making their debuts in the competition, having moved from local clubs.

Troy Smart (Under-54kg), Jeff Ofori (Under-63.5kg), Jordan Joseph (Under-81kg) and Sherif Musah (Under-86kg) complete Islington’s complement of boxers.

And in the female ABA Championships, held alongside the men’s event in the same venue, Islington’s unbeaten Cherrelle Brown will be looking to add to her 2012 ABA title when she competes in the Under-63.5kg category.

Hazel Gale (Under-67kg) could make her debut for Islington, while Valerian Spicer (Under-57kg) will be looking to add to the experience of boxing for London two weeks ago.

“We have become very popular with female boxers recently and we have up to 10 ladies training regularly in our main competitive boxing sessions at the club, of which six have competed for IBC,” said club spokesman Reggie Hagland.

“Hopefully, like the boys, all the girls get to box on Thursday night but it depends how many enter their weight and standard class.”

Elsewhere, Islington’s St Lucian international boxer Ryan Charles is stepping up his preparations for the upcoming World Amateur Championships at a training camp in Kazakhstan.
