Teenage paceman Harry Podmore has conceded that poor fielding cost Middlesex the chance to record their second Twenty20 win of the season against Glamorgan.

The Panthers posted a challenging total of 184-3 in Thursday’s South group clash at Richmond, but Glamorgan captain Jim Allenby struck a sparkling century to lead his side to victory.

Chris Cooke and Stewart Walters saw the Welsh side home with three balls to spare, but they were assisted by some sloppy Middlesex fielding, including an overthrow in the final over, bowled by Podmore.

The 19-year-old seamer admitted: “There were a few misfields and without those I think it could have been a completely different game.

“I think we were still in the game with 19 needed off two overs. It could have been 12 or 14 to win off the last over instead of six and we’d have been right back in it.

“We batted very well and we would have backed ourselves to win that game. But Allenby batted out of his skin – he hit all our good balls and credit to him and Glamorgan.

“This bowling line-up isn’t our strongest, but the quality we did have was still capable of keeping the score down and winning the game. We’ve got to move on from here.”

The Panthers won the toss and decided to bat, but Joe Denly (5) departed in the second over to a superb one-handed catch from Walters on the mid-off boundary.

However, Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan set about the visiting attack and put together a partnership of 76, broken only when the skipper – who had made 41 from 28 balls – was caught at mid-wicket.

That slowed the scoring rate, but Dan Christian launched a brutal assault that included five sixes and had reached 48 from just 29 deliveries when he fell to another excellent catch on the boundary by Cooke.

Malan, who had been put down by Cooke earlier in the innings, remained unbeaten on 68 as he and Ryan Higgins (17 not out) steered Middlesex to 184-3.

However, Allenby and Jacques Rudolph (42) made short work of the run chase with an opening partnership of 136, a Dragons record in Twenty20 cricket.

Rudolph eventually reverse swept Neil Dexter (1-26) into the hands of Ravi Patel, while Podmore (1-35) removed Mark Wallace (16), but Allenby remained and brought up his ton with a sweet cover drive off James Harris.

Although there was a scare for Glamorgan when Allenby (105) holed out off Harris (2-49) and Ben Wright departed next ball, it was not enough for the Panthers to avoid their ninth defeat in 11 T20 games.
