Felix Waters picked up her first senior victory in the Islington Schools Running League to spearhead Mossbourne Academy’s charge towards the girls’ title.
Waters, who won the Years 7-8 championship with Stoke Newington School last season, is now competing for Mossbourne in the Years 9-11 section and took the honours in the second race of the league at St Aloysius’ College.
The 13-year-old finished well clear of four of her new team-mates, clocking seven minutes 28 seconds ahead of Orla Hill (8:02), who was runner-up for the second time in successive races.
Valentina Walls (8:05), Robine van Doorn (8:19) and Phoebe Adugna (9:13) made up a clean sweep of the top five for Mossbourne, who unsurprisingly lead the way in the team standings.
Another Mossbourne student, Stella Thomas-Epstein, is doing her best to fill the role vacated by Waters in the Years 7-8 girls’ competition, winning her second race of the season in a time of 7:50.
She was followed home by Stoke Newington duo Lola Orton (8:00) and Lara Saiz (8:16), who repeated their second and third placings from the first race to ensure the two schools are joint top in the team event.
In the Years 7-8 boys’ event, Stoke Newington student Theo Machin Paley emulated his brother Alex – twice a race winner during the 2012-13 season – with his second successive victory.
Machin Paley was first to cross the line in 7:08, with Stoke Newington team-mate Joe Halsey (7:21) taking second place and Mossbourne’s Chico Leung Paton (7:27) in third.
Mossbourne and St Aloysius’ are tied for top spot in the team event – but both are trailing in the Years 9-11 boys’ table to Stoke Newington, who had four finishers inside the top eight.
However, the individual honours went to the home school’s David Keto (6:26), while the reigning Years 7-8 champion, 12-year-old Luca Minale of Mossbourne, held off Stoke Newington’s Louis Orton by two seconds to take the runner-up spot in 6:41.
The next race in the series takes place around Emirates Stadium on Monday November 16.
