Old Streetonians were given a lesson in finishing as a ruthless Wasps side capitalised on their loose moments to seal a resounding 39-10 win at Hackney Marshes.

It was another frustrating afternoon for the home side, who are now five points adrift at the bottom of the league – and conceding on average more than 30 points a game.

In a familiar story of the Onians season so far, the teams were more evenly matched than the scoreline suggests, but it was the west London side who made the most of their opportunities.

Despite some excellent passages of play, there was no reward for Streetonians, who must now concentrate on their big match a week on Saturday against Fullerians at Allianz Park, home of European giants Saracens.

Stand-in Old Street coach Chris McAtominey said: “There were some positives but we need to concentrate for the full 80 minutes, and make sure we convert all of our chances.

“We’ve got a week off now to train hard and take inspiration from the autumn internationals, and see if any of their play rubs off when we take to the artificial pitch at Allianz Park.”

Meanwhile a mixed second and third team suffered badly at the hands of the referee away to Ealing Amateurs – unable to provide a front row, the scratch XV were docked a player for going uncontested at the scrums.

But the Onians were in much bigger trouble just minutes in after the ref harshly sin-binned two players – Ealing repeatedly punishing a 12-man defence with several first-half tries.

And, despite some decent play in the second half when back up to 14 men, they had two more players sin-binned by a card-happy referee and struggled to contain a well-drilled home team, eventually losing 62-5.

The third team game was called off after top of the table Staines 2s pulled out.
