As a team, we’ve done so well this season and to put the sprinkle dust on it with the championship would be absolutely awesome.

It’s been a superb season and not just in four-day cricket – that includes getting to the Twenty20 quarter-final as well. Even if the actual game didn’t go to plan, it’s still good progress.

We’ve stayed unbeaten going into this final game and we’re working our proverbials off to try and lift the championship. Hopefully we can get the rewards we think we deserve.

I can’t actually put into words what it would mean to win the title – obviously I’ve never done it and I’ve never got close to it. In fact, I wasn’t even born the last time we won it, so there’s history to be made!

Hopefully I’ll find out very soon how it feels. But I know it’d mean a hell of a lot to the guys here, especially those who have been on the circuit for a while.

We’ve played some good cricket and players have stood up to be counted all season, which is what you need in a successful side.

That’s something that’s been ingrained in this squad for the last two years – in fact, you can look back as far as Jimmy Harris and Tim Murtagh in the game at Old Trafford the season we were nearly relegated.

Obviously for me personally, the year’s gone really well. Scoring my maiden Championship ton was obviously very satisfying and emotional as well.

There was another incredible moment for me on the first day of this match when I was awarded my county cap.

I didn’t know it was going to happen until I was walking off at lunch. To have grown up at this club, having been here since the age of 14, to get my cap is an absolute dream.

It’s come earlier than I expected, to be honest, but it feels like a reward for some hard work this season. It helps me in terms of solidifying my place in the team.

At the end of the day, though, I can only do that through scoring runs at the top of the order.

It was also a big honour for me to be picked in the England Lions squad this week and I can’t wait to get down to work during the winter.

We’re going to Sandhurst for a week in November, then to Dubai, and I’m looking forward to it. It’s great to have three other Middlesex guys in the squad as well – they’re all good players and fully deserve to be there.
