It’s been disappointing for me to miss the last two matches, but you can always accept being left out if the reasons are valid.

The management made the reasons clear and told me to play for the second team, bowl a lot of overs and get some confidence. I felt I did that.

But I realise I can’t just walk back into the side. I have to wait for my chance and, if it doesn’t come next week at Lancashire, then we move on to winter.

Looking back at the season overall, I think it’s been a good one for me personally, but by no means perfect. I did quite well in white-ball cricket, especially the Twenty20.

Going to play for England Lions was something I couldn’t have dreamed of at the start of the year. I was really happy to get that exposure and the chance to impress the coaches.

But hopefully next year I can improve my skills in four-day cricket. You have to be versatile and my long-term goal is to become an established player in all formats.

As a team, of course, there’s no doubt it’s been a disappointing season, especially in white-ball cricket, and that’s something we need to improve drastically.

We weren’t good enough in the Twenty20 and in the 50-over competition we did have some good performances but we were too inconsistent.

In the Championship we started so well – but the momentum went in the wrong direction and we just haven’t been able to claw it back.

Although we’ve got some of the best players around the county circuit, who perform year in, year out, maybe we just haven’t grabbed the key moments in matches. Other teams have had that knack of driving home the advantage.

We’re all determined to make sure we don’t get relegated – and equally determined to do better next season. We have to – a club like this should be in the top half of the table, at least.
