Finsbury Park coach Gareth Chapman says building momentum is key after sealing five consecutive league victories to start the season, writes Jacob Ranson.
Park face their biggest challenge yet in Herts Middlesex One when they travel away to fourth-placed St Albans on Saturday.
Chapman and his side currently lead the way after an impressive start to the campaign but he insists this weekend is where they determine how good they actually are as a side.
“They are fourth in the table so we’re expecting a tough game and I think this is our biggest challenge yet,” he said.
“I think this game will determine if we can make a real promotion push so it would be quite a big deal for us to go away and get these points.
“It will also show that we do belong in this league and that we can compete with the top sides.”
The former player is delighted with his squad’s efforts but believes there is always room for improvement.
“I can’t ask for more from them although I do think there is always room for improvement,” he added.
“Every bad play we make and every try we let in, we try our best to go through them and work on it, and the best thing is all the lads are willing to put the effort in to do that.”
With St Albans a bit of an unknown quantity, Chapman feels the first half will be vital for his side to learn about their opponents.
“I don’t know about them, but what I try to do is read match reports in the build-up to the game to learn a bit about them,” he said.
“The first half we have to learn as much as we can about them and see if we have to change things at the break.”
Park go into the match on the back of a week off from league action but they did manage to keep their winning run alive as they sealed a 37-26 victory against Writtle Wanderers in the Junior Vase.
“It was a really tough game and probably the hardest test we’ve had all season,” saud Chapman. “I think the guys learnt alot of lessons in the match as well.”
