Samuel Aggrey-Adams kept a cool head as he netted the decisive kick to earn Regent Rovers their first ever piece of silverware as they beat FC Mutant on penalties in the Jack Walker Shield final.
Rovers, who were only established in 2012, struggled to defend in windy conditions and conceded early in their final against the Islington Midweek League Division One champions.
The equaliser came just before half-time and against the run of play as Rovers’ top scorer Abobaker Eisa pounced on a defensive error and then reacted fastest after his initial shot had been saved.
The tide seemed to have turned in favour of Mutant when injury problems reduced their opponents to 10 men, but superb defensive performances by Andy Byrne and Peter Panayiotou ensured that the scores remained level.
That meant the tie had to be settled on spot-kicks and Rovers – who have already been promoted to the Premier Division alongside their opponents – triumphed 5-3 to clinch the trophy.
