Metro Blind Sports were commended for their work within the borough at the annual Sport Islington and Islington School Sport Partnership awards.

The sports and social club, who have created opportunities for partially sighted members of the community to play tennis, were named Sport Islington organisation of the year at Monday night’s ceremony at Islington Town Hall.

Metro were among 19 individuals and groups whose contributions to Islington sport were recognised at the awards night, sponsored for the first time by Aquaterra Leisure.

Sport Islington chairman Michael MacNeill said: “The awards were a great celebration of Islington sporting talent – be it performer, official, organiser, coach or club.

“It was heartwarming to see Metro Blind Sports win the organisation of the year award, particularly as this is their 40th year and one year on from the success of the Paralympics.”

Sport Islington’s club of the year award, along with a £200 grant, went to Islington Netball Club, while Zakaria Dahir was named volunteer of the year for his work with both The Access to Sports Project and Young Supreme Voices.

The sportsman of the year award went to Dominic Mcloughlin, a young water polo player who has also collected the Ron Turner Memorial Trophy and the Jack Petchey Foundation outstanding achiever award.

Young fencer Yasmin Campbell, who has been selected to represent Britain, held off stern competition to win the sportswoman of the year award, while Declan Hamblin was presented with the contribution to schools sports award.

Hamblin, who has worked in the borough for several years as a head of PE and school sports co-ordinator, received his trophy from former Islington Borough Ladies FC star Keisha Graham, who is now playing in the USA.

St Mary Magdalene Academy’s under-11 table tennis side won the Islington Schools Primary sports team of the year award, while the individual awards went to Zachary Zeldin-Steinmann and Kiah Nayanna respectively.
