Replacement quarterback Timothee Liechti made his first start on Sunday as London Blitz opened their domestic campaign with a 43-0 win over South Wales Warriors.

Liechti, who finished Blitz’s European defeat in Paris the previous week when Joe Thompson was forced off with a serious injury, stepped up to the starting role on Sunday.

His efforts helped to ensure the Finsbury Park team got back on track in their first British American Football Association game of the season.

“I was really excited to say the least,” said Liechti. “To start for Blitz really is the pinnacle of UK American football.

“It was a great start to the season – the whole team stepped up. Blitz strive to be the best and, when we face Cambridge Cats in our next game on Sunday, we need to show that we are.”

Blitz have been busy off the field, having agreed a sponsorship deal with mobile phone giants O2 on the eve of their trip to Paris, where they faced Templiers d’Elancourt in the newly-formed International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Champions League.

The visitors led 14-10 at half-time, but Templiers’ American import Sean Shelton led his side’s recovery as they sealed a convincing 54-14 victory.
