Veras Academy duo Ross Mathieu and Ben Pomeroy scooped gold medals at the English Karate Federation Championships in Sheffield last weekend.

Mathieu triumphed in the Under-60kg senior male kumite category at Ponds Forge, while Pomeroy was victorious in the Under-57kg kumite for 14 to 15-year-olds.

And there was a terrific effort from Jasmine Pomeroy, which realised two bronze medals for the Under-61kg female kumite in both the senior and Under-21 sections.

With four medals already in the bag, Andras Tamas rounded off a great weekend for the academy by winning another bronze in the Under-75kg senior male kumite.

The fifth member of the Veras Academy squad, Andrew Mclarney, narrowly missed out on increasing that tally by finishing fifth in the Under-60kg senior male kumite.

“I am extremely proud of my team,” said head instructor Sensei Raphael Veras. “Each one is working toward individual long-term goals and this competition was an important part of that journey.

“Each one of them performed to their best ability and I could not ask them for more than that.”

Veras Academy hold regular classes at Ringcross Community Centre, Islington, and Britannia Leisure Centre, Hackney.
