Multi talented gospel and soul singer, songwriter and pianist is in the UK from Atlanta

Multi talented gospel and soul singer, songwriter and pianist Avery Sunshine will be playing a one-off gig in Islington on Thursday (8).

Rooted in gospel – Avery is choral director at two Atlanta churches where she is training the next generation of gospel singers, including at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr Martin Luther King Jr was co-pastor with his father.

But she is also fluent in many styles from soul and house to classical and hip-hop.

The Atlanta singer-songwriter was a frequent visitor to the UK last year, making her first headline appearance at Union Chapel in Islington.

She went on to make an appearance on Later...with Jools Holland, performed at the Southport Weekender, and played three concerts as special guest to BB King, including one at the Royal Albert Hall.

Her single “I Got Sunshine” also became a firm favourite at BBC Radio 2.

Avery’s past credits include working with Jennifer Holliday as choral director on a production of “Dream Girls”, and her unique mix of styles has led to collaborations with such artists as Anthony Hamilton (when he was a choirboy), songwriter-producer David Foster and Michael Buble.

She also appeared in a musical stage play “I Dream” about the life of Dr Martin Luther King.

Last month she released a digital mini-album titled “Avery Sunshine At Union Chapel”, which includes four songs recorded at her performance last year, as well as house remixes of her songs “Ugly Part Of Me” and “I Got Sunshine”.

It’s clear she enjoyed the venue so much that she is happy to return back to the Union Chapel again.

Avery Sunshine will be playing at Union Chapel in Compton Avenue, Islington, on Thursday (8).

Doors open at 7pm.
