A brand new festival celebrating the clitoris is coming to Stoke Newington this weekend.
ClitArt, from Reel Rebels Radio, is a three day event on October 6–8, which combines raising awareness for new medical research with a programme of art, comedy, poetry, film, workshops and live radio all revolving around the clitoris.
Artists participating in the festival include Mal Harrison from Museum of Sex, as well as Gia Balestra, Rebecca Scott, Laura Kingsley, Rachelle Romeo and Lindo Khandela, among many others.
“‘Clitoris’ is not a dirty word,” says Alicia Graham, director of Reel Rebels Radio. “We need to move away from the shame and stigma; we need to be educated about our bodies and be aware. It’s about combating FGM and normalising female anatomy for the benefit of everyone – especially young people. We need a starting point in the UK for clitoris awareness.”
“We aim to put recent discoveries about the clitoris into the UK Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) curricula and all printed and online educational material because, in terms of educating the population about female anatomy, the UK is way behind our European counterparts. French children are taught SRE with a 3d clitoris, whereas adults in the UK often don’t know what it looks like or how it functions.”
The launch party at 7pm on Friday features poetry and spoken word from a line up including LGBT Poet Laureate Trudy Howson, with open mic slots available (£5 on the door, £3 for low-wage)
On Saturday at 1pm a workshop “Prioritising the Female Orgasm” hosted by Love Sex, Hate Sexism, puts male pleasure to one side and draws inspiration from Sex Positive Activism (£5).
In the evening, Hysterical offer a comedy line up that will be broadcast live on Reel Rebels Radio. Amy Annette is headlining, co-editor and contributor to book I Call Myself a Feminist, with support from musical comedian Harriet Braine, clitoral historian Sadie Harrison, Glory Pearl (aka the Naked Stand Up) and Cerys Bradley, whose solo show discussed “The Invention of Lesbianism”.
On Sunday, Laila El Metoui runs a workshop entitled “Negotiating Consent when English is a Second Language”.
ClitArt is a trans-inclusive festival.
