Football and dance – an unusual marriage. But Sadler’s Wells has never shied away from the irregular.

Football and dance – an unusual marriage. But Sadler’s Wells has never shied away from the irregular.

Home Turf is a collaboration between West Ham United Foundation and a team of dancers, including foundation participants, Sadler’s Wells’ own Company of Elders and alumni of the National Youth Dance Company.

Choreographed by Pascal Merighi, Michela Mezza, Lee Griffiths and Neil Fleming Brown, the professional and non-professional outfit of more than 100 dancers will be moving to music by Doctor Who composer Murray Gold.

This unconventional joint venture is a precursor to future collaborations that may follow the club’s move to the new stadium at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with Sadler’s Wells opening an additional theatre on the site in 2021.

“This is another fantastic opportunity for the foundation to work alongside partners and use football as a way to engage people in activities that they may not usually get involved with,” said Joe Lyons, the foundation’s chief executive.

“Our partnership with Sadler’s Wells will be one of the most creative collaborations we’ve been involved with at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and one we’re extremely excited about.

“To offer local people from the community such a rare opportunity is something we’re extremely proud of.”

Speaking of Home Turf, Sadler’s Wells artistic director Alistair Spalding added: “Bringing members of our community into the work we present breathes life into the theatre, contributing to our ongoing exploration of what performance is and helping us develop new audiences for dance.”

Home Turf premieres on Sadler’s Wells main stage on September 24.
