From June 19 to 25, Refugee Week is back with arts and educational events around the country to raise awareness and hope for a better way of dealing with the ongoing crisis, and Islington and Hackney are no exceptions

With the election chaos and continuing political maelstrom, it’s easy to become distracted from the bigger picture, but Refugee Week is bringing it all back home.

From June 19 to 25, Refugee Week is back with arts and educational events around the country to raise awareness and hope for a better way of dealing with the ongoing crisis.

Through film, music and art, local people around Islington and Hackney are joining in to demonstrate their support and to showcase the contributions refugees bring when they come to the UK.

The Institute of Light in London Fields is hosting the first public screening of Team Faizy, an independent documentary around asylum seeker Ajmal ‘AJ’ Faizy, simultaneously fighting for world boxing title and his right to stay in the UK.

He came to England alone as a refugee aged 14 fleeing torture in Afghanistan.

The screening is followed by a Q&A with the director and two experts in issues facing unaccompanied children seeking asylum here.

Esna Su’s wearable sculptures star in The Rubble Talks Too, which brings fourteen performers, each representing a region of Syria, and shows the journey of refugees. It reflects the experience of displaced people on the road and in sprawling refugee camps like in Su’s hometown of Antioch, Turkey.

The event is at Sarabande: The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation on June 21,6:30pm, 22 Hertford Road, N1 5SH.

Love Music Hate Racism is the continuation of the Rock Against Racism movement of the late 1970s, which used music to unite people rather than divide them.

The gig at The Victoria in Dalston presents music from Lloyd Luther, Zara Sykes, The Baskervilles and Ghosts of Men to show that music gives strength and is a celebration of a multicultural society.

The Refugee Week Pub Quiz hosted by BiD (Bail for Immigration Detainees) at the Blacksmith and Toffeemaker is raising money and awareness for their work in helping asylum seekers and migrants to challenge their detention and secure a release.
