A preview of a play marking 80 years since Joe Orton’s birth arrives at a Dalston theatre next week ahead of its journey to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The Tower Theatre Company’s show Entertaining Mr Orton comes to the Arcola Theatre in Ashwin Street next Friday (August 2) and celebrates the milestone birthday of the late playwright, widely considered to be one of theatres most enduring and enigmatic sons.
The play imagines Orton’s life as if he had written it himself – exploring what fired the creation of his most outrageous characters and if real events inspired the storylines of his plays.
It takes in three episodes in his life; his trial, imprisonment and murdaer in a black comedy in Orton’s own iconoclastic, farcical, shocking, innuendo-strewn style.
In 1967 Orton, 34, was bludgeoned to death, at his home in Noel Road, Islington, by his partner Kenneth Halliwell who then went on to commit suicide.
