As I tucked into my mouth-watering roast dinner with my doe-eyed labrador looking longingly at my feast, I was free of the usual pang of guilt.

Because the Red Lion and Sun has to be the dog-friendliest pub around – not only does it welcome our canine companions, it has its own menu for them.

Following a relaxing Sunday stroll on Hampstead Heath, I dropped in there one recent Sunday with my hungry hound who was greeted with a pig’s ear and a choice of three flavours of Lily’s organic dog food.

And as my sister and I supped the light and fruity house red, an Italian Sangiovese, the pooch lapped up a bowl of fresh water.

But, while this canine embrace is a huge selling point for any dog lover – this isn’t the only good reason to visit this beautiful gem of a pub, which dates back to the 16th century.

For it takes just as good care of its two-legged diners, with an inspired and daily changing menu serving up top-notch food featuring anything from jerk chicken to 21-day dry-aged Limousin grass-fed steaks, as well as traditional mouth-watering roasts on a Sunday which we were lucky enough to try.

Seeing the hefty servings beforehand, my sister and I decided to share a starter – half a dozen Jersey rock oysters which were beautifully fresh and served with a tangy Cabernet Sauvignon vinegar and shallot dressing.

We had a choice of four roast dinners – I opted for the pork belly, while my sister went for the roast beef. I struggled to get the better of my huge helping of meat, which was bursting with flavour and not too fatty, while the crackling on top was as crispy and flavoursome as it should be.

Meanwhile, my sister’s roast beef was tender and tasty and the gravy a dream. Our vegetables were cooked to al dente perfection and the Yorkshire puddings a delight.

Squeezing in dessert was tough, but rewarding – I opted for the sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and ice cream which was fluffy, moist and delectable.

My sister’s chocolate brownie, served with chocolate sauce and ice cream, was devilishly good but not too rich.

I couldn’t think of many better places than this cosy, welcoming pub to come on a Sunday – and I don’t think the dog could either.
