For a child growing up in the 80s it was one of the biggest films around, so Future Cinema’s new Ghostbusters screening was always going to be a nostalgic affair.

But the night offered so much more than just a glance back on the cult classic – it managed to transport the crowd all the way back to 1984 in what was an ultimate night of guilty pleasure, with all the panache that’s become expected of this pioneering immersive film powerhouse.

Having passed the blue flashing lights of the Ghosbusters car entertaining the queue lined up beside the Troxy in Limehouse, we stepped inside to find the art deco venue transformed Manhattan hotel the Sedgewick – which features in the first film.

Once past the receptionists with thick New York accents, we stumbled into New York Fashion Week gala celebrating the haute couture of designer Diane von Shattenburg, complete with a live jazz band, hot dog stalls and alcoholic slush shakes.

After exploring various little spooky corners set up in the venue – one of which even included a real parrot – the party kicked off with plenty of glizty 80s flair, the paranormal activities started and the Ghostbusters arrived. I won’t spoil the surprise for anyone who may be yet to go, but the acting in the events unfolding before and during the film was superb and loaded with well thought out detail.

It all culminated in an 80s disco which pumped out some of the decade’s biggest hits in a cheesy – but fitting – end to what was a brilliant trip down memory lane.

Future Cinema – fresh from its run of Dirty Dancing this summer in which its huge set took over a huge swathe Hackney Downs for an entire weekend – has once again managed to create one of the best feel good events of the year.

New December dates for over 18s have just been added due to demand and tickets for a family friendly screening on Monday December 23 at 12.30pm are also available at www.futurecinema.co.uk/tickets. Tickets cost £35 or £28.50 for concessions, and £15 for children.
