From the locations to the costumes, director Luchino Visconti fills the screen with eye watering detail as weary Sicilian prince and his family watch the old world disappear during Italian unification in the mid-19th century.
Burt Lancaster is great as the prince - the international cast (and bizarrely even the locals) were dubbed into Italian - and while the pace might be leisurely, it's hard not to be gripped by the film's beauty and slow-burning emotion. - JUSTIN MATLOCK
